
He is the president of the F.N.S “ALMA MATER” (2009–present), a national trade union organisation in the field of higher education, a member of the ARACIS Council (2015–present), and a former ARACIS expert evaluator in the field of “Mechanical Engineering” (2006–2009), a full member of the Academy of Romanian Scientists (starting with 2020) and vice-president of this academy (starting with 2024), a corresponding member of the Technical Sciences Academy of Romania (effective 2018), a member of CNATDCU in the Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Robotics Commission (2011–present), and Romania’s representative in the Higher Education & Research Standing Committee (HERSC) (2017–present). He is deputy editor-in-chief and scientific reviewer of the ISI journal “Plastics Materials” and a scientific reviewer for several other ISI journals.
He graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest, Faculty of Machine Building Technology in 1984. He earned his PhD in Engineering from the POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest in 1997, specializing in “Strength of Materials, Elasticity and Plasticity”. Since 1990 he has been part of the university’s teaching staff in the Department/Chair of Strength of Materials at POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest, becoming a full professor in 2003 and a PhD supervisor in the field of “Mechanical Engineering” in 2008. Under his scientific supervision, 15 PhD students have obtained their doctorate in Engineering, while another 12 are at various stages of their doctoral programme. He is Vice President of the Senate of the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest from 2012.
His fields of expertise are: Strength of Materials; Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Structures Made of Isotropic and Anisotropic Materials; Invention; Biomechanics; Entrepreneurship, Technology Transfer, and Intellectual Property Protection.
His scientific research activity within the university (12 projects coordinated as director or project leader, obtained through competition) has resulted in the creation of experimental stands, laboratory works, experimental models and prototypes, as well as scientific publications (over 320 papers, of which 85 were published in ISI-ranked journals and more than 40 in conferences with ISI-indexed proceedings), books (17 books published with recognized publishers, as author or co-author, two of them by the Romanian Academy Publishing House and AGIR Publishing House), and patents (eight patents and several patent applications).
He has numerous citations in Web of Science (Hirsch index 15) and Scopus.
As a participant in various invention exhibitions (Geneva, Brussels, Budapest, Barcelona, Warsaw, Bucharest, etc.), he received multiple distinctions – over 35 awards, medals, and diplomas of excellence, including: 23 gold medals, 9 silver medals, 6 special prizes, etc.
He has taken part in competitions for projects funded by European funds and won seven projects, in which he acted as project manager or project leader on behalf of the university.
He has been awarded nine honorary titles of Doctor Honoris Causa by universities in Romania.
He was a member of the Presidential Commission for the Analysis and Development of Policies in the field of education and research in Romania (2006–2008) and of the working groups formed within the presidential program „Romania Educata” (2017–2018).
He served as president of the “Eco-Nano-Technologies and Advanced Materials” Commission within the Consultative College for Research, Development and Innovation of the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research (2014–2016).
