
Dr. Ing. Daniel P. Funeriu is a former Minister of Education, Research, Youth and Sports of Romania, former Head of the Education and Research Department of the Romanian Presidency, and former Member of the European Parliament. He currently assists the Government of the Republic of Moldova in its efforts to join the European Union, with a particular focus on reforms in education, research, and innovation.
Educated in Romania until the age of 17, where he was a member of the national chemistry team, he then continued his studies in France, earning his baccalaureate at the Lycée International des Pontonniers in Strasbourg. In 1994, he graduated at the top of his class at the University of Strasbourg, and in 1999 obtained his PhD in chemistry with the highest honors under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn.
Before entering high-level public office, Dr. Funeriu pursued an international academic career, conducting research in leading institutions across France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, and Germany. In 2006, he was awarded the prestigious EU Marie Curie Excellence Grant at the Technical University of Munich (€2 million), where he led a research group and contributed to designing the successful proposal for Germany’s first Universities Excellence Initiative.
Called to public service during Romania’s 2009–2011 economic crisis and the 2012 constitutional crisis, he and his team implemented major reforms in education and research. The legislation he passed was grounded in the comprehensive vision proposed by the Miclea Presidential Committee on Education and Research Reform, translating its principles into concrete policy. These reforms were accompanied by significant anti-corruption measures, including the fight against academic plagiarism and exam fraud.
